The past couple of weeks have been filled with lots of paint & dirt. While fresh paint is exciting, it's a little challenging to capture. Seems like I'm always chasing the light trying to get it "just right."

The kitchenette is coming along -- the wall color is a soft green-blue and I'll trim it in espresso.

The counter tops just got installed, too.

The tile I found for the tub surround was a surprise. I instantly liked it at the tile store, but didn't have an idea of where I might use it. Inspiration struck and the tub surround was IT! It really offers a rustic feel to the bath. Everyone who has seen it in person has really liked it.

And for the "dirt" portion -- I'll spare you pictures of the septic system and water lines,

but hey, it IS really exciting!

A fun little pot holder (aka log cabin test).

Turned out pretty well, only issue was sewing together the multiple layers. Too much batting made it hard to keep the seams straight. Lesson learned.

I've been practicing more pot holders and want to quickly move into a larger project.

I can see my precision getting better and my piecing (which will become a potholder) is much improved from the last- I hardly had to trim any edges to square things up (despite my crooked photo).

A local knitter was working on adorable mini socks for a fundraiser and I was smitten. I offered to make a few and have really enjoyed these small projects.

There's a lot to love about working in miniature: 1) practice sock making skills (heel turns, gussets, etc) 2) satisfaction of completinga project ratrher quickly 3) giving to a worthy cause (Gillespie County rural schools) and 4) using us bits of leftover yarn! Plus, the end result is pretty darn cute!

So in order to get fully inspired, I needed a trip to the fabric shop.

What fun new spring prints to choose from! I can see that I need to work on color theory and design, but quilting is a learning curve. So what should I make with my first quilting venture -- something useful and small (I need a sense of accomplishment). How 'bout a hotpad?

After a few hours, here we are --- my first completed project.

Cute fabric? - check!

Inspiration? - check!

Mistakes? (oh, hell yeah!) check!

I can also easily see that I need to keep my fabric taught and work on sewing precision.

Did I have fun? Ab-so-freakin'-lutely! I'll be back for more!

When you suffer from addiction, everything reminds you of "that thing" you shouldn't have.
When I look at my yarn stash, all I can see is fingerless mittens. Nice thing is that it only takes a couple of nights to complete a pair - maybe that's the high: I can crank them out quickly. In addition, it satisfies my type-A/score-keeping-self: I can check off another project done on my never ending list of "I want to do that."

Plus these are great to gift and the non-knitting recipients don't have a clue as to how easy these really are to make.

I always like to do a little something for my pups at the holidays......

Here's a great recipe for dog treats- it's really easy to make it all organic, too!

I made about 100 treats in one batch using a small (1.5inch) bone cookie cutter.

Homemade Dog Treat Recipe Peanut Butter Puppy Poppers
2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 tbsp. baking powder
1 cup peanut butter (chunky or smooth)
1 cup milk
Preheat oven to 325F. In a bowl, combine flour and baking powder. In another bowl, mix peanut butter and milk, then add to dry ingredients and mix well. Place dough on a lightly floured surface and knead. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness and use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Bake for 20 minutes on a greased baking sheet until lightly brown. Cool on a rack, then store in an airtight container.

Allison Van Zandt of Simply Sock Yarn Company.

We have worked together on four knitting kits this year and hope to do some more next year. Allison does such a wonderful job of marketing and coordinating, that the kits (usually 200 or more) sell out in hours. Seriously.
The photo (I swiped from the Simply Sock Yarn blog) is the latest kit. The first round sold out immediately and she's posting another set in a few days. Check it out! Don't you just love the striped sock yarn?!

Good Bye, Sweet House

Sixteen years ago, my parents purchased a sweet little house in the heart of Fredericksburg, Texas, known as Rose Cottage. It sat in the middle of three houses, all originally owned by sisters. We understand that it was a Sears & Roebucks catalog house.
I remember the day my parents moved in - boxes EVERYWHERE. As my mom & I moved out the last bit of furniture, we took a moment to marvel at how all of the original hardware worked as if it were brand new, how every inch of the house is completely purposeful, how the unpainted original interior woodwork shines as it had just been stained, how the heavily trodden floors bore the years so well, and all of the memories it holds. It was a lot of fun to decorate and restore over the years. The crepe myrtles in the front yard were beautiful, especially this year- I suppose, as a farewell. It will be missed and spoken of fondly. I hope the new owner loves it as much as we did.

Autumn Sunset

Autumn is my favorite time of year for many reasons: the fashion bible -VOGUE- comes out (not that I adhere to it, but I love it anyway), my laborious summer garden can be tidied, cool breezes replace the humid stillness, the sun shifts in the sky and illuminates everything with a soft golden glow. But the biggest joy of autumn is KNITING. This time if year, yarn shops are busting at the seams with new colors and fibers. Oh, my.

To celebrate the season, I have begun a new shawl. Lightweight wool, with shifting colors in an autumnal palette. The pattern is basic, but shows off Noro's divine color sense.

So much for keeping a clean house. My freshly washed curtains disintegrated upon hanging them. So I had to replace them immediately. Ugh. I picked up fabric from Skye & Henry's and quickly whipped up these simple kitchen curtains. This window is on the street side and required a floor to ceiling panel.

This is an awkward semi-bay window over my kitchen sink. It's a hard one to cover, but this pretty fabric made it easy. Part of my cakeplate collection make it into this shot as well as a few stems of lavender from my very own mini lavender field.

The Fredericksburg Farmer's Market is a melange of local food, flowers, and culinary show-offs!

Oh, and what a treat it is. Every Thursday from late spring to fall, local farmers gather and share their wares.

Today I made off with squash, onions and fresh scallion topped bread for dinner (the tomato is from my garden). The sunflowers came from Nancy, who is dedicated to bringing a little cheer to tables far and near.

Don't forget dessert: the quintessential Fredericksburg peach with a drizzle of local honey,
over Blue Bell ice cream.

I also bagged some fresh cucumbers and plums. I ran out of space in my bag, but fresh goat cheese and lavender were available... plus more than I had time to see.

-- this lovely Noro happened to be on sale. Possibly a new shawl on the top two. I think I already have a skein of the bottom one--- so I wanted to snag a bit more for a larger project.

Mountain Magic

I am a fan of Mountain Colors Yarn and my LYS has often aquired mill ends from them. They are an inexpensive way to try out some really great yarn. The downside is that you don't know how much yarn is in each ball (weighting it helps, but that can't always be trusted). And typically there are not enough mill ends for large projects.

I decided to start a shawl. It my be kind of odd, but we'll see. I picked up blues & greens that each had some kindred colors. The idea is to get a progression of color that compliment the one another. It won't be a smooth color progression, but by using a very basic shawl pattern, I think the colors will be shown off.

Housework

The term "housework" is met with many different connotations from dusting to remodeling. I am somewhere in between. I just had some wood and a door replaced plus a few small things done to my house. This particular side of the (east) is abused by weather -- direct sun in the morning, which can be just as intense as the west sun.

I am repainting the exterior-- it's a lot of work, but the end result is gratifying! By the way, it's amazing how much paint fades: I knew this fact in theory, but the reality is startling.

I really haven't had any extra time lately.

Any stolen moments have been dedicated to the garden, rather than crafting.

This time of year the windows & doors are flung open. The boundries between outdoors and indoors are blurred. The taste of fresh salad greens, cilantro and spring onions are on the tongue.

You can see the rows of greens that have already been harvested, leaving an ugly gap in the rows. Carrots and parsley are starting to shoot up, soon tomatoes will go in the ground.

Olympic Knitting

Knitters are always up for a challenge; and when the Olympics roll around, LOOK OUT!

The premise is to complete a project during the Olympic game duration. I have chosen socks. To honor the Olympic host country, Canada, I have chosen this yarn from Fiber Artists (of Nova Scotia) because it reminded me of maple leaves turning in the fall. I will be doing a pattern form Toe Up Socks, that looks like little mountain tops.

One thing I know for sure, I will not be wearing a new pair of socks by February 23rd- too many other projects on the agenda, but at least I'll get started.

Lemon Curd 101

Lemon curd consists of three ingredients: lemons, eggs, and sugar. Fresh is best!
This is the way I make it.
First, gather ingredients from the backyard.

Half a cup sugar and four egg yolks at room temp (two were still warm from just being laid).
Add half cup fresh lemon juice and zest from one whole lemon. Wisk in double boiler.
After 10 minutes of constant wisking:

I don't strain the zest, I like it with little chewy bits.
Place is pretty jar (absolutley NO plastic). Refrigerate.
Voila!

Bonus: I had a lovely bowl of egg whites for an omlette.

Each year, I come up with a packaging theme. This year is all about reusable bags. Of course, the box wrapping has to match....

You can use anything from designer bags, mid priced LL Bean or Lands End (above) totes, or even a reusable (above from Whole Foods) or fold up shopping bags. A simple handmade card adds a special touch.

I really love the holidays, but more than the spirit of the season I adore all of the making opportunities!

I was short on time this year, but still carved a little time for card making.

And a bit of knitting.....
